A Year in Office

Looking back, the pattern of my year began with an intensive schedule of ‘Nurture through Nature’ visits through the summer months, leading to the NetWalking events in September, the Justice service, a succession of conferences, the Remembrance and Christmas services, and finally to Spring and the build-up towards the Lecture and today’s High Sheriff awards. Never a dull moment. And all the while, a steady rhythm of attendance at Courts and Police ceremonials.

Today is particularly focused on my theme. But I have always believed the Sheriff’s prime responsibility to be to uphold and support those working in the Justice system. So, it is no coincidence that many of the highlights of my year have been close encounters with those getting on with delivering justice, often in circumstances of significant strain and pressure. Whether those be ride-outs with police units, private time in Judges’ chambers in the Crown and Family courts, tours of prisons, or a gardening session with the Community Payback team, it is those conversations, those meetings with remarkable people doing remarkable work, that stick in the mind. As with the charities I am supporting today, it has been my privilege to thank these people for what they do on behalf of us all.

Let me not finish without two special mentions.

First, as an East Herts man, I was especially proud to have brought the Justice service to All Saints’ in Hertford for the first time in over 25 years. This called for a special effort from all involved. In my humble opinion, was a resounding success.

Second, I must thank my wonderful wife, Henrietta, and the whole team on the farm here at Easneye. It is only because they have shouldered much of my day-to-day responsibilities that I’ve been able to commit wholeheartedly to this venture.

It is a great honour to be asked to serve as High Sheriff of Hertfordshire. I am hugely grateful to all who have given support and encouragement throughout this year.
