I have been fortunate to go to lots of carol services and Christmas concerts, and celebrate this time of year with music and singing. Acting as Returning Officer in the General Election
One of the few remaining powers of the High Sheriff is to act as Returning Officer in a General Election. Once the date for the election had been announced, I chose to exercise my reserved powers and declare the result for the St Albans constituency. This looked as if it was going to be a marginal seat, with the Conservative party candidate, who had been in post for 14 years, being challenged by a Liberal Democrat rival. St Albans Sleepout
The Sleepout has been an annual event in St Albans for a few years now, and Oaklands College were wonderful and supportive hosts this year. There was good spirit and creative cardboard construction, and fortunately for us no rain! Music groups entertained us during the evening and there were hot drinks available, and at 11.30pm we made our way to our sleeping bags, packing up and leaving at about 7am the next morning.
